About Us

Calvert Sewing Center was born in 1966 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Now we proudly serve Southern Maryland as the CALVERT QUILT SHOP with the finest 100% cotton designer fabrics for quilting. We house over 9,000 bolts of brand-name cotton. You can find all the quilt books and patterns you might desire, from the latest and hottest to the older classics. Our goal is to be the best traditional quilt shop that you can find. Any of the products that we sell can be shipped to you. We sell the worlds largest manufacture of sewing machines, Janome. We also sell Elna and Necchi Sewing machines which are owned and built by Janome. Just call us and we will ship any of our products anywhere in the U.S. Click on our CLASSES icon to see what we are offering right now - from simple beginner classes to intermediate skill classes.

Mike Combs

Mike worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company during his college years, has been selling and repairing sewing machines in Calvert County since 1966. He periodically attends service training classes on all Janome sewing machines and software, loves to sell and pass on his knowledge, and repairs ANY machine if it is possible, computerized or mechanical. He is known throughout Maryland, Virginia, and surrounding states for his extensive expertise on repairing sewing machines.

Marti Phelps

A former Home Economics Teacher, has taught for our shop since 1980. She has travelled to the International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, Texas for the past 19 years, learning NEW techniques from the artists who write the books. Her favorite topic is Quilt History thus many of her classes reflect her love for American Patchwork. She lectures to area quilt guilds, antique arts groups, and at quilt shows on various quilt history topics, i.e. Quilts of the Civil War, The Underground Railroad and Quilts, and The Chicago World's Fair Quilt Contest of 1933. Her most current lectures are entitled "Patriots of the Civil War" and "The Circuit Rider Quilt".

Marti is a member of the American Quilt Study Group.

Marti's quilts have changed in the past few years as she has become a grandmother to 2 adorable fellas!!  Can you only imagine how many quilts they will have and already do have!!  Here is a pic of Miles wrapped up in "G"'s first long-arm quilted quilt!!!  Thank you to my friend Amy for all of her assistance on my first quilt quilted on our fabulous QMP18!!
